1920 - 1940
Description

Artist Biography

J. J. Bétourné (1919–2008)

J. J. Bétourné was a French artist and master enameller associated with the celebrated Limoges tradition of painted enamels. Working throughout the twentieth century, he established a respected workshop in Limoges and became recognised for finely executed enamel paintings on copper, including floral subjects, landscapes and decorative panels.

Beyond his own artistic production, Bétourné played an important role in preserving and teaching the traditional techniques of Limoges enamelling. His atelier trained and influenced a number of later enamel artists, including Jean Zamora and the Carmona brothers, helping to continue one of France's most important decorative arts traditions.

Although best known today for his enamel work, this drawing, dated 1936, appears to represent an early academic study from the beginning of his artistic career, demonstrating the accomplished draughtsmanship and tonal control that later characterised his work as a Limoges enameller.

Architectural Capital Study

Original Pencil & Charcoal Drawing on Paper

Dated 1936

An original pencil and charcoal drawing by the French artist and Limoges enameller J. J. Bétourné, depicting an intricately carved Romanesque or Gothic architectural capital.

Executed in 1936, the drawing displays confident academic draughtsmanship with beautifully observed tonal modelling and subtle transitions between light and shadow. The sculptural ornament is rendered with precision, revealing the artist's strong understanding of architectural form and classical design.

The work bears the artist's signature together with a 1936 inscription to the reverse and retains an indistinct workshop or collection stamp to the upper corner. It appears to date from the artist's formative years before establishing his reputation as one of the respected enamel artists working in Limoges.

Today Bétourné's enamel works remain sought after by collectors of twentieth-century French decorative arts, while original drawings from this early period appear considerably less frequently on the market.

This original pencil and charcoal drawing on paper by J. J. Bétourné dates to 1936 and belongs to the Classical Revival style. Rendered in monochrome grey, the composition depicts an intricately carved Romanesque or Gothic architectural capital with sculpted classical relief figures, acanthus leaf scrolls, and tonal graphite shading, presented unframed. The visible details comprise handwritten notations in the upper corner, distinct charcoal smudging textures, and varied tonal gradients creating shadow and highlight across the stone subject. The artwork measures 49 cm high, 66 cm wide, and 0.01 cm deep. It suits placement on a narrow wall space in a gentleman's library or study.

An architectural study is an observational or technical drawing created by architects, draftspersons, or artists to record, analyse, or plan structural and decorative building elements such as column capitals and friezes. Popularised during the Beaux-Arts era and Classical Revival movements, these drawings served as essential training and documentation tools.

Architectural studies from the mid-20th century were predominantly executed in graphite pencil, charcoal, or Indian ink on heavyweight cartridge paper or rag paper. Draftsmen utilised varied graphite grades and stump blending tools to achieve subtle gradations of shadow, light, and three-dimensional form.

Authentic drawings from the 1930s typically display natural paper oxidisation, subtle edge wear, and visible metallic graphite sheen when viewed under light. Artist signatures, dates, or studio stamps in pencil further help establish period origin alongside authentic paper aging.

Display monochrome architectural studies in simple black or dark timber frames to form a refined gallery wall in a hallway or home office. Alternatively, lean a single framed study on a console table alongside classical stone busts or modern ceramics to create visual balance.

To protect graphite works on paper, frame them using acid-free matting materials and UV-filtering glass to prevent yellowing and deterioration. Store or display the drawing in a temperature-controlled space away from direct sunlight and dampness to avoid foxing.
