The Cowgate Edinburgh - Watercolour by Thomas Fenwick Dated 1846

19th century
Description

Thomas Fenwick – In The Cowgate Edinburgh

Signed and dated; Th F. 1846 (bottom right.). Pencil and watercolour with white highlights on taupe paper, presented in a new mount.

Image: 8 3/4 x 11 1/4 in. (22.4 x 28 .4 cm.)

Mount: 13 5 /8 x 14 7/8 in. (34.6 x 37.6 cm.)

Thomas Fenwick was a Scottish painter. Little is known of the artist although numerous works have been sold at auction. A pupil of Alexander Nasmyth (1758-1840) Fenwick seems to have been particularly attracted to Edingburgh from the south by the reputation of Nasmyth’s teaching.

Between the mid 18th and mid 20th centuries, the Cowgate was a poor, often overcrowded slum area. In the 19th century, it was home to much of the city’s Irish immigrant community and nicknamed “Little Ireland”.

Topographical watercolours of the mid-19th century focused on detailed architectural depictions and realistic urban street scenes. Artists frequently captured historical landmarks, urban life, and changing cityscapes using delicate washes and precise draughtsmanship.

Artists typically used water-soluble pigments applied with fine hair brushes onto heavy rag paper or board. Charcoal, graphite, or ink underdrawings were frequently employed to establish perspective before transparent layers of pigment were added.

Authentic mid-19th-century watercolours often exhibit age-appropriate paper toning, precise handwritten inscriptions in pencil or ink, and period-typical brushwork. Inspection under magnification helps verify hand-painted execution rather than modern mechanical reproduction.

Framing the piece in a simple hardwood frame with an acid-free mount balances historic detail with modern aesthetics. Mounting the artwork as part of a gallery wall or above a console table creates a focused focal point.

Preserve watercolour art by using UV-filtering glass and archival mounting materials to prevent fading and discolouration. Display the work away from direct sunlight, fluctuating humidity, and direct heat sources.
