Antique Edwardian Inlaid Mahogany Sideboard | Foliate Marquetry

1900 - 1920
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique Edwardian sideboard in mahogany, a handsome and generously proportioned piece of excellent quality, showcasing fine craftsmanship and the elegant Sheraton revival style so popular at the turn of the century.

The sideboard is fitted with seven drawers in total: a long central drawer above the arched kneehole, flanked on each side by a bank of three graduated drawers. Each drawer is fitted with decorative pierced cast brass swing handles and a keyhole, offering a wealth of practical storage.

The drawer fronts are richly decorated with scrolling foliate marquetry within boxwood line stringing, a detail carried down the square tapering legs, which end on castors. The kneehole has shaped spandrels, the aprons are gently shaped, and a low upstand runs along the back of the moulded top.

The mahogany displays a lovely figured grain and a warm, rich colour, with the top in particular showing an attractive flowing figure and a pleasing aged patina.

Presented in good condition. A very desirable and impressive Edwardian sideboard, perfect for a study, home office or library.

Edwardian furniture produced between 1901 and 1910 is recognised for its refined proportions, returning to classical 18th-century influences such as Sheraton and Hepplewhite. Mahogany was widely used, often embellished with detailed boxwood stringing and floral or foliate marquetry inlays.

These pieces typically feature solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over pine frameworks, accented with contrasting wood inlays such as boxwood or satinwood. Drawer construction relies on hand-cut dovetail joints, complemented by cast brass handles and tapered legs supported by castors.

Authentic pieces exhibit precise dovetail drawer joinery, genuine timber marquetry rather than printed patterns, and age-appropriate wear to the brass hardware. The timber often displays natural patination, and original drawer linings may show slight shrinkage or timber oxidation.

Place the sideboard against a neutral wall backdrop to allow the intricate marquetry to stand out. Complement the warm mahogany wood by displaying contemporary ceramic accessories, modern table lamps, or abstract artwork above the unit to create a balanced contrast.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax polish once or twice a year following the wood grain. Avoid placing the furniture near direct heat sources or in direct sunlight to prevent veneer shrinkage, fading, or timber warping.
