This nineteenth century oil painting on canvas by Ernest Higgins Rigg portrays haystacks in a rural field at sunset, executed in the British Impressionism style. Dominated by golden brown tones, the composition shows a horizon with a low sun, dark hedgerows, and a large leafy tree alongside several conical haystacks in the foreground. The artwork is set within an ornate gilded wooden frame featuring detailed carved scrolling mouldings along the outer and inner borders and a stepped inner liner. The piece measures 86 cm high and 104 cm wide. In a contemporary home, this English country house artwork suits placement above the mantel in a living room, study, or hallway. The work brings traditional pastoral scenery to interior spaces, pairing effectively with classic or period decor schemes. Hang the painting securely using appropriate wall fixings suitable for the weight of the framed canvas.

British impressionist landscape paintings feature naturalistic light, visible brushstrokes, and rural subject matter, often portraying agricultural scenes such as harvests and fields during specific times of day.

These artworks consist of oil-based pigments applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas, housed within ornate carved wooden or plaster frames finished with gold leaf or gilding.

Authenticity is evaluated through fine surface craquelure, canvas oxidisation, age-appropriate wear to the gilded frame, and verified artist signatures or gallery labels on the stretcher bars.

Positioning a gilt-framed landscape above a fireplace mantelpiece or console table adds warm visual texture, creating contrast when paired with clean-lined contemporary furniture.

Dust the surface lightly with a dry, soft brush, keep the canvas away from direct heat sources and sunlight, and consult an art conservator for surface cleaning.
