Description

A tiny and very useful mid 19th century country house sofa by Howard & Sons - London, England. The walnut frame raised on ebonized walnut legs with the original Cope & Collinson brass casters. Retaining its original horsehair innards to the back and with a later added seat which would benefit from being replaced.

Structurally in good order and for upholstery.

There are a few areas of the seat rails with missing pieces which will be professionally restored before it leaves us. These are only cosmetic and do not affect its structure. Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This mid-nineteenth century Victorian sofa by Howard and Sons of London is constructed from a walnut frame raised on ebonised walnut turned front legs fitted with original Cope and Collinson brass castors. It features a curved back, a deep seat, and retains its original horsehair innards to the back alongside later added seat upholstery and incomplete hessian and calico coverings in beige. The exposed wooden frame displays cosmetic missing sections to the seat rails, and the dimensions measure 73 cm high, 125 cm wide, and 76 cm deep with a 38 cm seat height. Positioned in an English country house interior, this small two-seater sofa suits a living room, drawing room, or bedroom as a project piece for full professional reupholstery. It requires restoration work including the replacement of the seat, the missing original stretcher, and cosmetic timber repairs before use. Buyers can place it against a living room wall or near a fireplace to bring authentic period character and seating to a traditional or eclectic interior scheme.

Founded in London during the early 19th century, Howard & Sons became premier cabinetmakers and upholsterers famous for their deep-seated sofas and armchairs. Their innovative coil-sprung upholstery and superior timber frames earned them royal warrants and international acclaim throughout the Victorian era.

Authentic 19th-century sofas of this style feature seasoned beechwood or oak internal frames, webbed foundations, hand-tied steel coil springs, horsehair filling, and calico under-upholstery. The front legs are typically turned hardwood fitted with solid brass castors.

Authentic pieces are commonly stamped with Howard & Sons Ltd or Howard Chair Co. along the inner rear leg or on the brass castors. Original upholstery often features monogrammed ticking fabric, while structural markers include stamped serial numbers on the wood.

An antique sofa frame can be reupholstered in contemporary linen, mohair, or velvet to blend historic craftsmanship with modern aesthetic schemes. Positioned in a living room, drawing room, or master bedroom, the classical silhouette grounds both traditional and eclectic spaces.

Keep timber legs clean with a soft microfibre cloth and apply beeswax periodically to maintain the wood finish. Castors should be kept clean and lightly oiled if stiff, while upholstered surfaces require regular vacuuming with a soft brush attachment away from direct sunlight.
