This Georgian chest of drawers of neat proportions dates from around 1780. Constructed from mahogany, the timber displays a dark reddish brown colour with visible natural grain. The piece comprises a moulded top placed above four long graduated drawers fitted with brass swan-neck handles and escutcheons, and each drawer edge has cockbeading. The structure stands on shaped bracket feet. Measuring 86 cm high, 80 cm wide and 46 cm deep, this chest provides functional surface space and storage. It sits well in a bedroom, dressing room or hallway as a practical storage cabinet for folded garments or linens, while the top surface accommodates decorative objects or lighting.

FAQs

A Georgian chest of drawers typically features symmetrical proportions, mahogany or walnut timber, solid brass hardware, and bracket or bun feet characteristic of eighteenth-century British cabinet making.

Cabinet makers primarily utilised solid mahogany, oak, or pine for the carcass, featuring hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, cockbeaded drawer borders, and cast brass swan-neck handles.

Authentic pieces display hand-sawn timber marks on back panels, irregular dovetail joints, original brass escutcheons, and age-consistent wear to drawer runners.

Position the chest as a focal point in a hallway or bedroom, topping it with modern artwork, contemporary ceramics, or a table lamp to contrast classic timber with modern elements.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dust regularly with a soft microfibre cloth, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually to protect the surface.
