A chest on chest, also known as a tallboy or highboy, is a two-part piece of storage furniture featuring one chest of drawers mounted atop a slightly larger lower chest. This design became popular during the 18th century to maximize vertical storage space in traditional living quarters.

Eighteenth-century chests on chest were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany or oak, often lined with pine or oak drawer linings. Construction typically features hand-cut dovetail joints, moulded cornices, and cast brass hardware such as swan-neck handles.

Authentic 18th-century pieces display signs of hand construction, including irregular hand-cut dovetails, hand-sawn back panels, and natural wood shrinkage along drawer bases. Additionally, genuine age produces a deep patina on the timber and original brass fittings showing light surface oxidisation.

An antique chest on chest acts as a focal point in contemporary or transitional spaces, providing vertical proportion against neutral walls. Pairing it with minimalist art, modern table lamps, or structured ceramic vessels creates a balanced blend of historical character and contemporary design.

Preserve the finish by placing the chest away from direct sunlight and heat sources, which can cause timber movement or drying. Dust regularly with a soft lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to maintain the woods lustre.
