Georgian Figured Mahogany Chest on Chest with Brushing Slide C.1770

18th century
Description

A handsome provincial George III figured mahogany chest on chest, dating from the second half of the eighteenth century, with attractive figured drawer fronts and good architectural detailing. The upper section is surmounted by a moulded dentil cornice above a blind-fret carved frieze to the front, with fluted canted corners framing two short over three graduated long drawers. The lower section incorporates a useful brushing slide above three further graduated long drawers, the whole raised on bracket feet. The drawer fronts are faced in particularly attractive figured mahogany, displaying a rich, varied grain and good colour across both sections. The sides are stained pine, while the drawers have oak linings with the baseboards running from front to back, consistent with period cabinet construction. The chest is fitted with later brass swan-neck handles and escutcheons, with evidence of previous handle positions visible to the drawer fronts.

The combination of figured mahogany, blind fretwork, dentil cornice, fluted corners and brushing slide gives the chest considerable decorative interest, while the eight drawers provide generous and practical storage. A nice example of provincial Georgian cabinet furniture, combining attractive figured mahogany with well-balanced proportions and useful storage.

The chest separates into two sections for transport.

DIMENSIONS

Height: 185 cm

Width: 105 cm

Depth: 51.5 cm

CONDITION

Presented in good antique condition, with wear and historic repairs commensurate with age and use. The mahogany retains an attractive colour and figuring throughout. There are various marks, knocks and scratches, particularly to the stained pine sides, together with some damage and old repairs to the edges of the drawer fronts. The brass handles are replacements, with old handle holes present from previous fittings, and the feet are replaced. There are further minor age-related marks, movement and historic repairs throughout, as would be expected from an eighteenth-century piece of furniture. The drawers and brushing slide run smoothly, and the chest remains structurally sound.

Overall, the chest presents well, retaining particularly attractive colour and figuring to the mahogany fronts together with the pleasing proportions and architectural detailing characteristic of the period.

As an antique or vintage piece, signs of age and use should be expected and are part of its character. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase. If any dimensions are critical, please check these with us before purchasing.

This Georgian figured mahogany chest on chest dates from the second half of the eighteenth century. The upper section has a moulded dentil cornice above a blind-fret carved frieze, fluted canted corners, and two short over three graduated long drawers. The lower section includes a pull-out brushing slide and three further graduated long drawers, raised on bracket feet. The mahogany fronts display a rich dark reddish brown grain, complemented by later brass swan-neck handles and escutcheons. The stained pine sides and oak-lined drawers show marks, knocks, scratches, and historic repairs consistent with age and use, alongside old handle holes visible on the drawer fronts. Measuring 185 cm high, 105 cm wide, and 51.5 cm deep, this two-part chest separates for transport and provides generous storage in a bedroom, dressing room, or hallway.

A chest on chest, also known as a tallboy, is a case piece of furniture consisting of two separate chests of drawers stacked vertically to provide extensive storage space on a compact footprint.

Eighteenth-century examples were predominantly crafted from solid mahogany or oak carcass timber, faced with figured mahogany veneers, and fitted with cast brass handles and steel lock mechanisms.

Authentic Georgian chests display hand-cut dovetail joints, oak or pine secondary drawer linings, hand-sawn carcass construction, and cast brass swan-neck handles with corresponding keyhole escutcheons.

A Georgian chest on chest provides structural height and visual grounding when positioned against a neutral wall in a principal bedroom, dressing area, or wide hallway alongside modern light fixtures.

Maintain mahogany timber by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish along the wood grain twice yearly while avoiding direct heat sources.
