Antique Georgian Late 18th Century Folk Art Collage & Gouache Painting of English Gamekeeper & His Dog

18th century
Description

A charming late 18th century folk art picture depicting a rural figure, possibly a gamekeeper, standing with his faithful dog in an English countryside setting. What makes this piece particularly interesting is the way it has been constructed. The figures have been cut out separately and applied to the painted background, creating a simple layered effect, while the clothing has been made from small scraps of real fabric, likely taken from worn-out garments.

The combination of gouache painting, cut paper and recycled textiles creates a wonderfully tactile and decorative image that reflects the resourcefulness of the period and gives a real folk art aesthetic.

Condition is good, commensurate with age. The dust cover at the rear has been gaffer taped, so could do with some attention, but other than this, it’s in good overall condition.

This late 18th-century Georgian folk art picture depicts a seated gamekeeper in beige and brown fabric attire resting his hand on a spotted dog against a painted gouache landscape background. The composition combines textile applique, cut paper, and gouache painting within a tactile layered format. The gamekeeper wears a neutral beige coat with dark buttons over a brown sleeve, holds a hat, and rests his hand on the white-and-brown hound dog, while a rustic tool handle projects upward near his right arm and his black shoe is visible at the lower left. The picture measures 39.5 cm high by 33 cm wide. In a home today, this piece is well-suited for display above a sideboard in an English country house interior. The tactile textile details and layered figurative portraiture provide an authentic rustic aesthetic suitable for traditional or eclectic decorative schemes.

During the late 18th century, British folk art collages combined gouache or watercolour painting with appliqued textiles and paper to create textured, figurative scenes. These works typically depicted rural life, sporting figures, or local characters with naif compositions.

Artists utilised watercolour or gouache paints on paper backgrounds, layering cut silk, wool, or linen fabrics to construct the clothing and figures. Gum arabic or animal glues were commonly used as adhesives.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural age-related toning on the paper, hand-woven period fabrics, and distinct hand-painted gouache details. Examining the fibre weave and adhesive degradation under magnification often confirms 18th-century origins.

Hang artwork in a gallery wall arrangement alongside period prints or place it in a dark wood frame above a console table to complement traditional or transitional interior schemes.

Keep the artwork framed behind UV-protective glass with acid-free mount boards, away from direct sunlight, dampness, and extreme temperature fluctuations to prevent fabric degradation and paint flaking.
