Antique Waltham Full Hunter Pocket Watch, 1919

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique Waltham full hunter pocket watch, 1919.

The watch has a seven jewel stem-winding movement, grade 610, which is working nicely. The movement is fully signed and it has the serial number 22,952,283 which dates it back to 1919. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is the gold plated Star model from the Dennison Watch Case Company, supplier of cases to Waltham UK. The case is in good condition, just general light surface marks commensurate with its age.

The winding crown pushes in to open the front cover.

Inside, there is an acrylic lens which is in good condition (some natural light reflection showing in the main photo).

The signed dial is in good condition, just one short faint hairline underneath the subsidiary seconds dial.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

This early 20th century pocket watch is an antique Waltham full hunter piece from 1919, styled for a gentleman's library. It is manufactured from rolled gold, glass, and enamel, presenting a warm gold colour and a polished metallic finish. The object displays a white enamel dial with black Roman numerals, blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial, and a fluted winding crown with an attached bow loop. General light surface marks commensurate with its age and a short faint hairline beneath the secondary dial are visible. The piece has a 50 mm diameter excluding the winding stem and loop. It sits on a clear acrylic display stand alongside a green book, a brown leather book, and a wooden box, making it suitable for display on a desk or collector's shelf.

A full hunter pocket watch features an outer protective metal lid that completely covers the glass crystal and dial. The hinged cover releases via a spring mechanism, usually activated by pressing the crown, protecting the face from damage.

Pocket watches from this era typically feature cases made of solid gold, silver, or gold-filled rolled plate. Dials are commonly crafted from fired enamel on copper, paired with blued steel hands and glass crystals.

Authentic Waltham pocket watches feature serial numbers stamped directly on the internal movement rather than the outer case. Cross-referencing this movement serial number with historical Waltham manufacture records verifies the exact production year and grade.

A pocket watch can be showcased as a decorative object using a specialized glass cloche dome or a brass watch stand placed on a desk, bookshelf, or side table alongside leather-bound books.

Mechanical pocket watches require gentle winding once daily at a consistent time, stopping when resistance is felt. They should be kept away from water, extreme temperature fluctuations, and magnetic fields, and serviced by a horologist every three to five years.
