Antique 19th Century French Walnut Sideboard | Carved Cherub

19th century
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique Continental sideboard in walnut, a handsome and characterful piece of good quality, showcasing fine traditional craftsmanship and charming hand-carved detail.

The front is fitted with a pair of fielded panel doors with iron drop handles and shaped iron escutcheons, the right-hand door retaining its iron lock. The doors open to a spacious interior with a single shelf, offering generous storage for china, glassware or table linen.

The moulded top sits above a frieze centred by a finely carved winged cherub head, flanked by carved acanthus corbels, with carved acanthus pilasters running down either side of the doors. The panelled sides match the front, and the whole stands on a moulded plinth raised on sturdy block feet. The solid plank back and traditional frame-and-panel construction speak to its age.

The walnut displays a lovely figured grain and a deep, rich colour with a wonderful aged patina built up over many years.

Of compact proportions, it is ideal for a dining room, hallway or living room. Presented in good antique condition, with marks and wear consistent with its age. A very desirable Continental walnut sideboard, a perfect addition to any traditional or country interior.

This 19th-century French Renaissance Revival sideboard is fashioned from dark brown walnut with a polished finish and brass hardware. The front displays a pair of heavy panelled doors fitted with drop handles, flanked by fluted pilasters, while a winged cherub head is carved into the frieze beneath the moulded top. The timber shows a rich, figured grain with natural wear, and the base rests upon sturdy block feet. Measuring 91 cm high, 128 cm wide, and 55 cm deep, this compact buffet suits a dining room, hallway, or living room for storing china, glassware, or table linen. The traditional frame-and-panel construction houses a spacious interior with a single shelf, offering practical organization alongside its decorative carved details.

FAQs

Nineteenth-century French walnut sideboards often incorporate classical Renaissance Revival or Provincial design elements, featuring detailed relief carvings, geometric moulding on panelled doors, and solid timber construction designed for dining room storage.

Craftsmen typically utilised solid French walnut or walnut veneers over oak framing, joined with hand-cut dovetails, mortise and tenon joints, and fitted with hand-forged iron or cast brass hardware.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-saw marks on rear paneling, slightly irregular dovetail joints, age-appropriate wear around keyholes and handles, and solid timber construction showing natural grain variations.

Position the piece as a focal point in an entryway, dining space, or living area, balancing its dark wood tones and heavy proportions with minimalist contemporary artwork, neutral wall shades, and modern table lamps.

Maintain the wood by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the timber and protect the original finish.
