This walnut kneehole writing desk dates from the Arts and Crafts period around 1920, made by Heals of London. The piece has a light brown finish with book-matched quartered grain panels on the top and drawer fronts, complemented by dark ebonised ball feet and square knob handles. The arrangement includes nine smooth-running drawers with hand-cut dovetails, set around a central kneehole aperture. Measuring 76 cm high by 125 cm wide and 66 cm deep, the construction is fully finished on the reverse so the unit can stand independently in the middle of a room away from a wall. Suitable for use in a gentleman's library or home study, this practical partner desk provides ample workspace and storage capacity. The surface offers generous room for a laptop, books and stationery, whilst the side pedestals organise paperwork efficiently. A labelled maker's piece of traditional English antique furniture, it brings functional style to a professional workspace or residential study.

A kneehole writing desk is a form of flat-top desk featuring a central open recess for the users legs, flanked on either side by vertical columns of drawers or small cupboards.

Heals desks were typically crafted using high-grade timber such as oak, walnut, or mahogany, featuring hand-dovetailed drawer joints, quartered veneer work, and solid turned or ebonised feet.

Authentic pieces often feature an inlaid ivory, bone, or brass makers disc set into the upper drawer edge, or an inset ivorine or paper label bearing the Heal & Son London inscription.

Position the desk near natural light and pair it with a contemporary leather task chair, balancing the warm wood tones with minimalist desk accessories or a modern brass reading lamp.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, avoiding direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and bleaching.
