Strickland & Russell has dated this German Watercolour Landscape Painting to the 1890s.
Artist: Unknown / Unsigned
Title / Subject: Zollernschloss and Eyach Weir, Balingen, Württemberg
Date: Circa 1885–1895
Medium: Watercolour on paper
Location: Balingen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany

Details:
The composition shows the castle complex rising above the Eyach, with the weir and associated water-control structures below. The restrained palette, detailed architectural drawing and softly handled landscape are typical of accomplished Central European watercolour painting of the period.

The location is particularly interesting because the old wooden Eyach weir was destroyed during severe flooding in 1895 and was subsequently replaced. The weir at this point diverted water into the Mühlkanal, which historically supplied local mills and workshops. This raises the possibility that the present watercolour records the area before the major alterations of 1895.

The Zollernschloss itself was later substantially reconstructed in the 1930s, making this earlier view additionally interesting as a historical record of the old townscape.
Artist / Local Association:
The work is unsigned and is not attributed to Friedrich Eckenfelder (1861–1938). However, Eckenfelder had a strong lifelong connection with Balingen and repeatedly painted the Zollernschloss, Eyach and Mühlkanal area. Known works include views of the Zollernschloss from the 1880s and later paintings of the same riverside complex.

Balingen holds a substantial collection of Eckenfelder’s work, and his repeated treatment of this exact locality confirms that the Zollernschloss and Eyach were established artistic subjects in the region.

The present painting should therefore be regarded as an unsigned period view of a subject closely associated with Eckenfelder and the Balingen school of landscape painting, rather than as a work by Eckenfelder himself.

Condition:
Good antique condition overall with age-related toning, staining, surface marks and wear to the paper and old mount. There are some edge imperfections and minor losses consistent with age.
Size of artwork incl. mount approx. 30 x 24 cm (mount aperture approx. 17 x 12 cm)
