Oil on Canvas Racing Pigeon Painting.

1900 - 1920
Description

We are offering to you this Beautiful Oil on Canvas of a “Red Sky” — red chequer racing cock, owned and flown by N. Walsh

A framed portrait of the racing pigeon “Red Sky,” a red chequer cock ringed NUHW 23.TFC.4105 and owned and flown by N. Walsh. The bird stands in profile against a loch-and-hill landscape, with its race record painted into the foreground: 2nd Nantes B.S.E. in 1924, 3rd Bournemouth in 1925, and winner of Perth, 367 miles, in 1926.

This is a traditional fancier’s portrait of a champion racing pigeon, painted to record both the bird and its performances. “Red Sky,” a red chequer cock, is shown standing on a path and facing left, alert and full-bodied, with the upright carriage prized in old loft portraits.

The head is blue-grey, with a pale cere and a clear orange eye. The neck carries a green metallic sheen that deepens into chestnut on the breast. The wings are a warm red-orange chequer, each feather tipped and edged in white, while the belly, flights and tail are clean white. The legs and feet are painted a strong rose-pink.

Behind the bird is a soft highland-style landscape: still water to the left, green slopes, a flat-topped hill on the right, and low bushes in autumn colour under a pale, clouded sky. The setting reads as the country of the long north-road race rather than a literal view of the loft.

The record is lettered in the lower left of the picture:

1924 — 2nd Nantes B.S.E.

1925 — won 3rd Bournemouth

1926 — winner Perth, 367 miles

Below that, the painting is titled “Red Sky” and identified as a red cheq cock, NUHW 23.TFC.4105, owned and flown by N. Walsh. The work is presented in a figured warm brown wooden frame.

Signed on the Back Canvas G.S.Harper.

Framed painting of a red chequer racing pigeon named Red Sky, standing in profile on a path with hills and water behind it, and its 1924–1926 race record lettered on the canvas.

Dimensions of the Painting are 50.5cm Wide - 33cm High and 2cm Deep.

Delivery within the UK is included in the asking price.

Pigeon racing portraiture developed as a distinct genre of sporting and folk art during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Fanciers commissioned artists to paint their winning birds, capturing physical features alongside hand-lettered records of race achievements and leg band numbers.

Paintings from this era were predominantly executed in oil paint on stretched cotton or linen canvas. Framing typically featured stained oak, pine, or timber veneers, often accompanied by a light slip frame to separate the canvas from the outer molding.

Authentic period pieces exhibit age-appropriate craquelure across the paint surface, natural yellowing of varnish, and historical canvas aging on the reverse. Handwritten race records, specific club acronyms, and period framing construction further confirm provenance.

Folk art portraits work well as focal points on gallery walls, styled above a sideboard, or layered within a bookshelf. Combining traditional sporting art with contemporary neutral backdrops highlights the historical narrative and colour palette of the artwork.

Keep oil paintings away from direct sunlight, central heating sources, and areas of high humidity to prevent cracking and canvas warp. Clean the surface gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaning agents.
