This late 19th-century Austrian cold-painted bronze inkwell follows the Vienna Bronze style, depicting a naturalistic woodland scene with a kingfisher perched on a branch above a hollow tree stump base. The piece employs cold-painted bronze and enamel finishes in deep brown, verdigris green, and warm orange hues, showcasing deeply textured bark on the branches, realistic feather detailing on the bird, and a gnarled root formation supporting the main vessel. Measuring 14 cm in height and 19 cm in width, this small desk accessory weighs 1 kg and bears a stamped "Geschutz" mark alongside an indistinct Bergman signature. Placed upon a study table or office desk, the inkwell functions as a decorative desk tidy suited for a gentleman's library or a traditional writing workspace.

FAQs

Cold painted bronzes refer to figures cast in Vienna during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries that were decorated with coats of oil-based enamel paint without firing. When crafted as inkwells, these pieces functioned as writing accessories while showcasing detailed naturalistic art.

These items were cast in solid bronze using lost-wax methods before being finished and detailed by hand using polychrome cold-applied enamel paints.

Authentic pieces usually display natural age wear to the soft paint finish, exceptionally fine casting detail in the underlying bronze, and occasionally foundry stamps or markings such as Geschutzt on the base.

Place the inkwell on a mahogany executive desk, a library console, or a bookshelf alongside antique leather books and brass desktop accoutrements to create a refined focal point.

Dust the surface gently with a soft, dry camel-hair brush. Avoid using liquid solvents, water, damp cloths, or chemical polishes, as these will dissolve or strip the original cold enamel paint layer.
