This nineteenth-century Georgian artwork is a pastel portrait by John Russell, depicting Miss Mary Linwood with brown hair, seated with a book and resting her chin on her hand. The piece incorporates pastel and paper mediums, housed in a Carlo Maratta style carved giltwood frame with glass, rendered in soft blue and cream tones with delicate lace on the bodice and a visible brown book spine. The oval frame displays ornate corner decoration and a polished gold finish, while the soft pastel brushwork captures the subject's expression and clothing texture. The piece measures 79.5 cm high, 64 cm wide, 3 cm deep in overall dimensions. In a modern home, this artwork is ideally placed above the mantel in a drawing room or study, contributing an authentic English country house design aesthetic to traditional interior spaces.

Georgian pastel portraits gained immense popularity in 18th-century Britain due to their soft texture, luminous colour retention, and rapid execution compared to traditional oil paintings. Prominent portraitists of the era utilised finely ground pigments bound with gum to capture delicate skin tones and detailed drapery.

Eighteenth-century pastel artworks were created using dry pigment sticks composed of pure powdered colour mixed with a binder such as gum arabic or chalk. These pigments were applied directly onto textured paper or mounted canvas and housed behind glass within carved or moulded giltwood frames.

Authentic period pastels frequently display subtle pigment bloom or micro-fissures under magnification, alongside period-correct hand-laid paper or wood backing boards. Original glass from this era often exhibits natural wavy distortions, while the surrounding giltwood frames show genuine patination and age-appropriate wear.

A Georgian portrait functions as a classic visual anchor when hung above a mantelpiece, sideboard, or within a gallery wall arrangement. Combining historical portraiture with contemporary minimalist furniture provides a compelling visual contrast while emphasizing the detailed frame and artwork.

Pastel particles rest loosely on the paper surface and can be easily dislodged, meaning the artwork must never be touched or subjected to heavy vibration. Display the portrait away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity, ensuring it remains sealed behind protective glass with acid-free mounting materials.
