Antique Narrow Mahogany Chest of Drawers | 20th Century

1900 - 1920
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique 20th century narrow chest of drawers in mahogany, a beautifully proportioned piece designed to provide generous storage while taking up relatively little floor space.

Its tall, slender form features seven drawers arranged vertically, each finished with matching decorative handles that give the front a smart and consistent appearance.

The narrow proportions make it particularly useful for spaces where a wider chest may not be suitable, while still offering plenty of room for keeping smaller belongings neatly organised.

Gorgeous grain and colour are displayed throughout the mahogany, giving the piece a rich appearance and showcasing the natural beauty of the timber.

Ideal for a bedroom, hallway, dressing room or study, its versatile size allows it to fit comfortably into a variety of interiors.

In good condition, well made and of good quality, this highly desirable chest combines practical storage with elegant mahogany and a distinctive slender design.

This twentieth-century Georgian style chest of drawers follows a tall and narrow format in warm brown mahogany. Seven stacked drawers occupy the vertical body, framed by a moulded top cornice and set above a cut-away plinth base. Every drawer fronts with a matching brass drop handle, creating a uniform arrangement down the slender timber facade. The wood displays a rich natural grain throughout its polished surface. Measuring 100.5 cm high, 40.5 cm wide, and 40.5 cm deep, this compact cabinet provides vertical storage while occupying minimal floor space. It suits placement in a bedroom, hallway, dressing room, or study for keeping smaller personal items organised within traditional interiors.

FAQs

Narrow chests of drawers, often related to French semainiers or English tallboys, evolved during the 18th and 19th centuries to provide maximum vertical storage within compact floor footprints. Typically constructed from fine hardwoods like mahogany, these multi-drawer cabinets were designed to organize daily garments, linens, or personal accessories.

Traditional chests are constructed using solid mahogany or rich mahogany veneers over softwood carcases. Quality indicators include hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, solid timber drawer linings, moulded top cornices, and cast brass bail or drop handles.

Authentic pieces feature consistent drawer wear, period-appropriate joinery such as machine or uniform hand dovetails, and naturally patinated brass hardware. Inspecting the underside and back panels reveals age-appropriate oxidisation and timber contraction.

A narrow chest fits into tight bedroom alcoves, hallway spaces, or home offices to add warm wood tones and vertical structure. Pairing dark mahogany with neutral wall finishes, contemporary ceramics, or framed artwork creates a balanced, layered interior aesthetic.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year along the grain. Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent cracking or warping.
