153 X 205cm Early Sewan Kazak, the Caucasus

19th century
For Sale by James Cohen Antique Carpets (Reserved for a buyer)
Description

Beautiful, early and extremely rare even in this condition, a Kazak 'Sewan' so named for large green shield medallion. Exactly the colour you look for in early tribal pieces, a bulls blood red background, a light green with many shades, light blues, yellows... It's a blockbuster for your wall. The 'Star' Kazak border works very well here and is another unusual feature, bordered nicely between a light green and light blue sawtooth. Heavily worn, crudely repaired in places and with the classic Kazak wrinkles that prevent it from lying or hanging well, this is a rug to get the pulse racing- it sure does mine!

5'0" x 6'9"

Declaration

James Cohen Antique Carpets has dated this Antique Sewan Kazak Rug to the 1850s.

This early Sewan Kazak rug dates to 1850 in the Caucasian tribal style, hand-knotted from hand-spun wool. The palette incorporates a bull's blood red background field with light green, light blue and yellow tones. The design displays a large shield medallion, a cruciform central motif, geometric borders and hooked elements, complemented by a star Kazak border framed by light green and light blue sawtooth bands. Physical characteristics visible in the piece include heavy wear, crude repairs in places, and characteristic Kazak wrinkles. Practical application suits this textile as a wall hanging within an English Country House interior setting. The dimensions measure 153 cm by 205 cm, corresponding to the imperial size of 5 feet 0 inches by 6 feet 9 inches.

Sewan Kazak rugs originate from the South Caucasus region and are characterised by their bold geometric designs, typically featuring a prominent central cruciform or shield medallion.

These rugs are traditionally hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for both the pile and the foundation, coloured with vegetable dyes.

Authentic pieces feature symmetrical knotting, soft wool foundations, natural colour variation known as abrash, and geometric tribal motifs specific to the region.

A Kazak rug serves as an anchor in a space, pairing effectively with neutral upholstery, timber furniture, or contemporary minimalist decor to create visual contrast.

Vacuum regularly on a low setting without a beater bar, rotate periodically to equalise wear, and clean professionally using specialised wool-washing processes.
