Description

18th Century English George III Mahogany Chest of Drawers

An 18th Century English George III Mahogany Chest of Drawers with Five Drawers.

This fine chest of drawers is a model known to have been made in the north of England in the mid to late 18th century, the architectural columns flanking the drawers being a hallmark of pieces made in this part of the country at the time. The chest has two small drawers above three graduated full length ones, each retaining their fine gilt brass swans’ neck handles. The top is nicely moulded on its edges and each one of the drawers is cockbeaded. It stands on bracket feet. This chest has a wonderful original colour which isn’t easy to photograph. The chest is very unusual to us as it has hardly been used and in incredible condition for its age.

This George III chest of drawers dates from the 18th century and originates from the north of England. Constructed from mahogany with a warm brown timber colour, the piece displays architectural reeded side pilasters, a moulded top edge, and cockbeaded drawer framing. The arrangement consists of two small upper drawers above three full-length graduated drawers, all fitted with gilt brass swan-neck handles and key escutcheons, and the entire structure is raised on bracket feet. The chest measures 85 cm high, 110 cm wide, and 54 cm deep. Practical for everyday storage, this chest suits placement in a bedroom, hallway, or living room. It functions effectively to hold folded clothing, linens, or household accessories while providing a stable surface for display items on top.

A George III chest of drawers typically dates from the reign of King George III (17601820) and is characterised by clean neoclassical lines, balanced proportions, and fine cabinetmaking.

Dense Cuban or West Indian mahogany was the primary timber used for facades, frequently combined with oak or pine drawer linings and hand-cast brass hardware.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-sawn secondary timbers showing tool marks, original cast brass fittings, and natural shrinkage line variations along the wood grain.

Position the chest as a focal storage piece in a hallway or bedroom, layered with contemporary ceramic lighting, framed art prints, or minimalist glassware on the top surface.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a beeswax polish once or twice a year, avoiding direct sunlight and proximity to radiator heat sources.
