This large nineteenth-century William IV sideboard is made from mahogany with a warm brown timber colour and a flame grain finish. The inverted breakfront top has three frieze drawers, above two pedestal cupboards with panelled doors and carved scroll supports, standing on a plinth base. The piece incorporates an ornate carved splashback upstand with a central carved cartouche, carved scrollwork on the door panels, and turned finials on the rear upper corners. It measures 132 cm high, 218 cm wide, and 68.5 cm deep. Positioned against a large wall in a dining room, hallway, or grand entrance hall, the sideboard provides substantial surface space for serving food or displaying decorative items, alongside internal storage behind its pedestal doors. The drawers hold table linen or cutlery, while the heavy classical architectural proportions suit traditional domestic interiors.

Produced during the reign of King William IV between 1830 and 1837, this style bridges the transition from refined Regency classicism to heavier Victorian design. It is characterised by robust proportions, prominent carved scrolls, architectural pediments, and rich woods such as mahogany and rosewood.

These pieces were typically crafted from solid mahogany and fine mahogany veneers, featuring hand-carved decorative motifs and flame mahogany door panels. Internal drawers often utilized oak or pine linings, secured with traditional hand-cut dovetail joinery.

Authentic pieces display evidence of period craftsmanship, including irregular hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-planed back panels, and cast brass locks or hinges. The mahogany displays a deep patina accumulated over decades, often accompanied by expected timber shrinkage lines or period-appropriate ironmongery.

A substantial mahogany sideboard serves as a focal point when placed in a modern dining space, hallway, or living area. Balance its proportions by hanging large-scale artwork above the splashback and pairing it with minimalist lighting fixtures or neutral ceramic decorative objects.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the wood finish. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber movement, veneer lifting, and colour fading.
