Cheshire Antiques Consultant Ltd has dated this Antique Equestrian Oil Painting to the Victorian era.
Charles Bilger Spalding 1810-1871
A Chestnut Hunter in a Stable
Signed and dated 1843
British oil on canvas

The horse is shown almost entirely in profile and dominates the composition. Rich chestnut, russet and mahogany tones define its coat, with carefully placed highlights describing the neck, shoulder, body and hindquarters. The quieter ochres, browns and greys of the stable provide an atmospheric background, while loose brushwork across the foreground suggests scattered straw.

The horse is best described as a mature chestnut hunter. No documentary evidence presently establishes its individual name, exact breed or historic owner, and the stable location has not been identified.

Charles Bilger Spalding was a British painter specialising in sporting and country subjects. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1840 and was associated with the sporting publishers S and J Fuller. His documented subjects include horses, hounds, hunting scenes and British country life.

The 1843 date is particularly interesting as it places this painting within the early period of Spaldings documented career. His equestrian subjects were already established by this time.
Spaldings sporting work is represented in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, by A Huntsman with His Horse and a Group of Hounds. His larger sporting compositions also include The Meet of the Hambledon Hounds at Preshaw House, Hampshire, painted in 1844.
