Antique Carved Oak Sideboard | Carved Stretcher Base

1900 - 1920
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique 20th century carved sideboard in oak, an impressive and beautifully detailed piece offering generous storage and plenty of character.

A beautifully carved supporting stretcher runs along the base, adding further decorative interest and complementing the craftsmanship seen throughout the piece.

Carved cupboard doors sit to either side of the front, with one opening to reveal a spacious interior compartment and the other containing a single shelf.

Four large central drawers provide further useful space and are finished with decorative brass handles, complementing the traditional appearance of the sideboard.

The top showcases a particularly striking oak grain pattern, with gorgeous variation and rich colour giving the surface wonderful depth and individuality.

The natural figuring of the timber is especially eye-catching across the large surface, making it one of the most appealing features of the piece.

In good condition, well made and of good quality, this highly desirable sideboard combines substantial storage, decorative craftsmanship and exceptionally beautiful oak.

This Jacobean Revival sideboard originates from the 1920 period and uses solid dark brown oak timbers with black iron hardware. The exterior displays carved outer door panels, heavy strap hinges, four central drawers with drop ring handles, and a carved low stretcher base resting on block feet. A striking timber grain pattern runs along the generous top surface. Measuring 80 cm high, 189.5 cm wide, and 43.5 cm deep, the unit provides substantial storage capacity. In a contemporary home, the sideboard fits well in a dining room, hallway, or living room to store tableware, linens, or household items while serving as a display surface. The deep wood tones and traditional craftsmanship integrate smoothly into period or rustic interiors, bringing historic character and practical utility to everyday spaces.

FAQs

Jacobean Revival furniture draws inspiration from 17th-century English designs, featuring dark oak construction, intricate wood carving, geometric panelwork, and robust stretcher bases.

These storage pieces were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak or walnut, held together with traditional mortise and tenon joinery and fitted with hand-forged iron hardware.

Authentic pieces feature signs of age including hand-carved details with subtle irregularities, original mortise and tenon joints, historical ironwork, and natural wear patterns on handles and surfaces.

Balance the visual weight of dark oak by placing the sideboard against light, neutral walls, framing it with contemporary artwork, and accessorising with minimal ceramic or glass objects.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking.
