Introduction

A rare and characterful British automobile mascot by Asprey of London depicting a Scottish Terrier seated upright in the classic begging position.

The Scottie balances upon its hindquarters with both forepaws raised. Pointed ears, elongated muzzle and projecting tail capture the distinctive character of the breed.

Fine incised lines reproduce the wiry coat. Areas of historic silver coloured plating survive, contrasting with warmer bronze exposed through age and use and darker patination within the recessed modelling.

This solid bronze car mascot dates from the 1920s Art Deco period and depicts a Scottish Terrier in a begging pose, measuring 12.5 cm high, 5 cm wide, and 5 cm deep. The figure stands on a circular base with a threaded mounting bolt extending underneath, capturing pointed upright ears, an elongated muzzle, and fine incised lines representing the wiry coat. The metal displays a mix of historic silver-coloured plating, warm exposed bronze, and darker patination settled within the recessed modelling, alongside surface wear, rubbing, and oxidation from age and use. Originally designed as a motor car radiator mascot, this piece functions well today as a decorative desk accessory or paperweight in a gentleman's library or home office. The upright silhouette shows the dog sitting upon its hindquarters with raised forepaws, bringing character and historical automotive design into an interior setting. The circular base holds the original fixing hardware, grounding the figure securely while highlighting its manufacturing heritage.

Car mascots, also known as hood ornaments, gained popularity in the 1910s through the 1930s as decorative embellishments mounted onto automobile radiator caps to reflect the owners interests.

Early automotive mascots were typically cast in solid bronze, brass, or zinc alloy, often finished with nickel, silver plating, or natural patination and mounted via a threaded base bolt.

Authentic vintage mascots feature hand-chased surface details, maker marks or foundry stamps, uniform age-related surface oxidation, and integrated threaded mounting rods rather than modern synthetic fastenings.

These compact metal sculptures function as historical accents when mounted on a marble or wooden base for placement on an office desk, mantelpiece, or bookshelf.

Maintain the original patina by dusting gently with a dry, soft cloth and applying a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax, avoiding harsh metal polishes or abrasive solutions.
