Introduction

The chestnut and white dog is a Blenheim Spaniel. Its black, white and tan companion represents the historic Prince Charles or tricolour variety.
Both animals sit in profile looking towards the right, creating an attractive and characterful Victorian dog portrait.

Subject
The dogs belong to the historic British King Charles or toy spaniel tradition.
The Blenheim variety has longstanding associations with Blenheim Palace and the Dukes of Marlborough, while Prince Charles was the traditional name for the tricolour variety.

Their contrasting coats are particularly effective against the muted green and brown landscape.
Attribution
Catalogued in the manner of John Dalby of York (1810-1865).
Dalby was a noted British sporting and animal painter. A recorded signed painting entitled King Charles Spaniels Seated in a Wooded Landscape provides a particularly relevant comparison.

The present painting dates from after Dalby's lifetime and is not represented as being painted by him.
Dating
Circa 1880.
The previous auction description identified the painting as late 19th century. Circa 1880 is an approximate catalogue date rather than a documented year.
