This Victorian large single bed dates from 1890 and comes from the maker Hoskins & Sewell of Birmingham, with a retailer label for Thomas Justice & Sons Ltd Dundee on the foot bar. The frame consists of a headboard, footboard, and two side irons made of brass and cast iron in a gold colour, standing on wheel castors with turned finials and a curved top rail. Visible details include vertical spindles, a maker logo, and extensive tarnishing, marks, wear, rusting, scuffs, and blemishes across the surfaces. The piece measures 151 cm high, 111 cm wide, and 200 cm deep, and accommodates a large single mattress measuring 107 cm by 190 cm without a mattress or base included. It provides a bed frame for use in a bedroom setting.

Popularised in the 19th century, Victorian brass beds feature tubular metal frames, turned decorative finials, and cast iron connectors designed for stability and hygiene.

These bedsteads were typically constructed using drawn brass tubing fitted over iron inner cores, assembled with cast iron corner joints and iron side rails.

Authentic pieces often display stamped maker marks on the cast iron joints, heavy gauge brass tubing, original brass castors, and dovetailed rail connections.

Pair the reflective metallic frame with crisp white cotton linen and neutral wall tones to create a balanced, contemporary English country aesthetic.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and polish unlacquered brass occasionally with a gentle metal cleaner, avoiding harsh abrasive chemicals that strip patination.
