Antique Oak Desk | Turned Legs & Stretchers

1900 - 1920
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique 20th century good quality desk in oak, a beautifully made piece with a warm traditional appearance and plenty of character.

Standing on four turned legs joined by supporting stretchers, the desk has a sturdy and well-balanced construction.

Five drawers provide excellent storage, arranged with two to either side and one larger central drawer, each finished with decorative brass handles.

Gentle carved detailing adds interest to the design without overpowering the natural beauty of the oak.

The grain is particularly attractive, with gorgeous patterns and rich colour running throughout the wood and giving the desk a wonderfully individual appearance.

In good condition, well made and of good quality, this desirable desk offers a generous working surface alongside plenty of practical storage.

With its beautiful oak, subtle carved details and classic proportions, it would make a welcoming and practical centrepiece for any study or home office.

This Jacobean Revival desk dates from 1920 and is made from dark oak with brass hardware. The timber displays an attractive grain pattern and rich colour across the surfaces. Five drawers are arranged in pedestals flanking a central drawer, fitted with decorative brass drop handles and detailed with carved arch motifs along the frieze. The structure stands on four turned legs joined by lower stretchers, featuring arched aprons beneath the drawers and small turned finials under the pedestal blocks. The desk measures 76 cm high, 127 cm wide, and 48 cm deep. Positioned as a practical centrepiece within a study or home office, the piece provides a generous working surface and multiple storage compartments. The sturdy stretcher base and traditional proportions suit daily clerical work or display purposes. The warm timber tones and period details complement traditional interior schemes while offering functional workspace.

FAQs

Jacobean Revival oak furniture features design elements inspired by the seventeenth century, including dark stained oak, turned legs, carved geometric or arched motifs, and lower stretcher bases.

Traditional antique oak desks feature solid wood construction with dovetail drawer joinery, mortise and tenon frame assembly, turned spindle legs, and cast metal handles.

Authentic pieces display natural age-related patination, hand-cut dovetails on drawers, uneven wear along drawer runners, and original back panels.

A carved oak desk can serve as a focal point in a home office or study when paired with neutral wall tones, contemporary task lighting, and streamlined accessories.

Maintain the piece by keeping it away from direct heat sources and intense sunlight to avoid timber movement. Dust regularly with a microfiber cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish periodically.
