Description

Rare 18th-Century Dutch Delft Faience Monkey Toby Jug – Pieter Verburg

Brief Description:

A wonderfully characterful and particularly unusual 18th-century Dutch Delft faience figural jug, modelled as a seated monkey wearing an oversized wide-brimmed hat.

The comical figure is depicted holding a distinctive yellow drinking vessel/spout to his mouth, with a curved handle extending behind his back. The piece is beautifully hand-painted in the traditional Delft manner, predominantly in rich cobalt blue upon a creamy white tin glaze, complemented by manganese-brown and yellow polychrome decoration.

The expressive modelling of the monkey's face, individually painted features and lively brushwork give the piece enormous charm and make it a particularly decorative example of 18th-century Delft figural pottery.

The jug is associated with Pieter Verburg and the De Blompot pottery in Delft. Verburg is recorded as proprietor of the factory between 1756 and 1789, making this an appealing example from one of Delft's historic ceramic manufactories. delftsaardewerk.nl

The underside bears the painted 'PB/2' mark, traditionally associated with Pieter Verburg.

An 18th-century Dutch Delft faience figural jug takes the form of an anthropomorphic monkey wearing a brown tricorn hat and a seated posture atop a patterned base. Tin-glazed earthenware forms the body, hand-painted with blue and white cobalt decoration alongside yellow and manganese-brown polychrome details. A curved strap handle extends behind the back while the figure holds a yellow cup to its mouth. The piece measures 20 cm high, 10.1 cm wide, and 7.8 cm deep. Displaying the piece on a sideboard top provides a focal point within a room scheme. The tin glaze shows the expected minor surface irregularities and small chips commensurate with antique status, paired with a painted 'PB/2' mark on the underside. Historic ceramic manufacture from the De Blompot pottery under Pieter Verburg defines the style.

Dutch Delftware is tin-glazed earthenware produced in and around Delft in the Netherlands from the 16th century onwards, inspired by imported Chinese porcelain and recognised by its white glaze decorated with cobalt blue and other oxide colours.

These jugs were hand-shaped or press-moulded from earthenware clay, coated with an opaque white tin glaze, decorated with metallic oxide paints like cobalt blue and manganese brown, and then kilned at high temperatures.

Genuine 18th-century pieces feature soft earthenware bodies showing buff clay where glaze has flaked, hand-painted brushwork with visible variations, tin-glaze pinholes, and period painted monograms or factory marks on the base.

Display character jugs on open shelving, fireplace mantels, or sideboards alongside sleek contemporary items to create visual contrast while highlighting historic ceramics.

Dust tin-glazed earthenware gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or dry soft-bristled brush, avoiding water immersion, liquid detergents, or abrasive materials that could cause glaze lifting.
