Description

Arts & Crafts Liberty & Co Tudric Pewter & Turquoise Vase by Oliver Baker c.1902

Brief Description:

This is a superb original Liberty & Co Tudric pewter vase, dating to the early 20th century, and associated with the celebrated Arts & Crafts designer Oliver Baker (1856–1939).

Standing an impressive 34.7 cm (13.7 inches) tall, the vase has a wonderfully architectural form, with a tall tapering hammered body rising from a broad flared foot. Applied openwork supports run vertically down the sides, terminating in stylised organic motifs secured with visible rivet details — very much in keeping with the handcrafted aesthetic of the Arts & Crafts movement.

The upper section is particularly striking, decorated in bold repoussé work with flowing, stylised floral and foliate ornament. Small turquoise cabochons are set amongst the decoration, providing a beautiful contrast against the wonderfully aged pewter surface.

The combination of hammered metalwork, exposed construction, organic decoration and turquoise embellishment gives the piece tremendous character and makes it instantly evocative of Liberty's finest turn-of-the-century Arts & Crafts metalware.

The underside bears the impressed TUDRIC mark together with the pattern/design number 0786.

A substantial and exceptionally attractive decorative piece, and an excellent example of British Arts & Crafts design from the height of the Liberty & Co period.

Introduced around 1901 by Liberty & Co, Tudric pewter was developed as a branded range of artistic metalwork designed to make Arts and Crafts decorative items accessible. Designers such as Archibald Knox and Oliver Baker created pieces featuring hand-hammered textures, organic plant motifs, and enamel or stone embellishments.

Tudric metalware was crafted from a high-quality pewter alloy with a higher silver content than standard pewter, giving it a bright, silver-like sheen. Designs frequently incorporated cabochon stones such as turquoise or chrysoprase, alongside enamel inserts and hand-moulded or hammered structural components.

Authentic pieces generally feature stamped maker marks on the underside, including Tudric, Liberty & Co, or specific four-digit model numbers. They display characteristic hand-finished hammered surfaces, precise casting of geometric or organic motifs, and integrated stone or enamel settings.

A pewter vase functions as a strong focal point on a mantelpiece, sideboard top, or open shelving. Its muted silver grey tone pairs well with natural timber surfaces, muted stone tones, and dark painted walls in contemporary schemes.

Pewter should be dusted regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and washed gently with warm soapy water if necessary, avoiding submersion if stones are set. Abrasive polishes and chemical cleaners should be avoided, as they can strip the historic patination and damage porous stones like turquoise.
