Description

A pair of 19th Century French Kingwood and marble top commodes of exceptional quality, having the original highly decorative shaped marble tops with a moulded edge, two oak lined drawers below and a two tambour door opening to reveal a large compartment space, the door fronts having decorative feathered inlay, the sides of the commodes having parquetry inlay, lovely quality ormolu mounts on each corner terminating on elegant shaped ormolu feet, shaped apron with central ormolu mount. Both commodes in excellent condition and having a lovely warm rich colour. Circa 1860.

Martlesham Antiques is a family run business and has been trading since 1984. Located in Suffolk just outside Woodbridge, Martlesham Antiques is run from a spacious thatched cottage housing nine large showrooms with a vast adjacent car park.

Specialising in 18th and 19th Century furniture, together with creating custom hand-made furniture which is supplied to various interior designers, trade and the retail market. Every piece on the showroom floor is in excellent condition and ready to go straight into the buyers home or premises.

All of Martlesham Antiques furniture is hand polished by their own French polishers and restorers to a very high standard. We are also a member of LAPADA, the association of art and antiques.

FAQs

A French commode is a low, wide cabinet or chest of drawers introduced in the late 17th century during the reign of Louis XIV. Designed to sit against a wall, it became a central piece of formal French interior furnishings throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.

19th-century French commodes were constructed using oak or pine carcases veneered with fine exotic woods such as kingwood, rosewood, or tulipwood. They typically feature heavy, fitted marble tops and protective gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts.

Authentic period commodes exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, thick hand-sawn veneers forming geometric parquetry patterns, and heavy cast bronze mounts with hand-chased surface details. The undersides and back panels often show hand-planed timber marks.

A pair of commodes can be placed symmetrically on either side of a doorway, fireplace, or long hallway wall to create structural balance. They serve as functional storage pieces while providing surfaces for decorative table lamps, mirrors, or contemporary artwork.

Clean wood veneers using a dry microfiber cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally to prevent drying. Clean marble tops with a pH-neutral cleaner, avoiding acidic substances that etch the stone surface.
