A stunning antique French bisque sculpture by Luca Madrassi (1848–1919). This was made in Paris, it dates from around 1890-1900.

It depicts a gorgeous classical scene, it is a lovely size and has a wonderful patina. The condition is excellent with no real damage to the sculpture. There is just one tiny imperfection to the rear of the base, seen in the images. It could be filled fairly easily, we have left it original for the time being.

Luca Madrassi was an Italian-born French artist best known for his bronze Art Nouveau sculptures of mythological, allegorical, and rustic figures. His work was influenced by the famed French illustrator and sculptor Gustave Doré. Born on June 8, 1848 in Tricesimo, Italy, he went on to study under Pierre-Jules Cavelier at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and later worked in the studio of Doré. Madrassi exhibited at the Salon de la Sociéte des Artistes Français from 1879 on, becoming a French citizen in 1890. The artist died in 1919 in Paris, France.

FAQs

Bisque, or biscuit porcelain, refers to unglazed porcelain that has undergone a single firing process, resulting in a matte, marble-like finish. Popularised in France during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, it was frequently used for fine art sculptures and decorative figurines to imitate classical marble.

Bisque porcelain was created by casting liquid clay paste, known as slip, into plaster moulds before firing at high temperatures without a glass glaze. This technique allowed sculptors to retain extremely fine anatomical details, crisp drapery folds, and soft, realistic surface textures.

Authentic French bisque pieces typically display a smooth, non-porous matte surface without glossy highlights, along with sharp detailing in hair and garments. Look for impressed makers marks, artist signatures, or mould numbers near the base, as well as period-appropriate hand-tooling along seam lines.

Place the sculpture on a dark wood sideboard, marble fireplace mantelpiece, or inside a lighted glass display cabinet to contrast its pale finish. Pairing the monochrome matte texture with contemporary art or minimalist decor creates a sophisticated focal point.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or vacuum gently with a soft brush attachment. Because unglazed bisque is porous and prone to absorbing oils, handle the object with clean cotton gloves and avoid using harsh chemical cleaners or water immersion.
