Japanese Meiji Period Patinated Bronze Dragon Antimony Tray, C.1900

A striking Japanese Meiji period metal tray, dating to around 1900, decorated with a dramatic ryū dragon modelled in bold relief around the shaped perimeter.

The dragon coils almost continuously around the tray, finely worked with overlapping scales, clawed feet, horns, flowing whiskers and an expressive head projecting prominently into the central field. The centre is deliberately restrained, allowing the deeply modelled dragon to dominate the composition.

The tray is formed from a dark patinated copper-alloy metal, probably bronze, with warm brown and copper tones visible through areas of surface wear. The reverse retains traces of an old gold-coloured finish and clearly shows the hollow-backed relief construction.

A particularly decorative example of late Meiji Japanese metalwork, combining strong sculptural modelling with one of the most recognisable motifs in Japanese art.
