Pair Antique Chinese Export Bronze Champleve Enamel Greco Roman Cachepots C.1920

A distinctive matched pair of antique Chinese export bronze and enamel cachepots / jardinières, dating to the late 19th to early 20th century, probably circa 1900–1930.

Of rounded ovoid form, each vessel stands upon a spreading pedestal foot and has a broad flared rim. The bodies are richly decorated with geometric diaper bands surrounding a striking central frieze of turquoise enamel brickwork populated by European / Greco-Roman style figures.

The narrative scenes include helmeted warriors, attendants, horses and processional figures, creating an unusual combination of East Asian metalwork and Western classical subject matter typical of decorative wares produced for the export market.

The coloured decoration appears to be executed in champlevé-style enamel, with turquoise, blue, cream, yellow and reddish-brown enamels contained within recessed areas of the bronze / copper-alloy surface. The surrounding geometric bands are worked directly into the metal and include repeating hexagonal and tortoiseshell-style motifs.

The unusual European figural decoration gives this matched pair considerably more character than the more commonly encountered floral examples of East Asian export enamel work.

The interiors retain extensive darkened patination, oxidation and historic residue consistent with age and use.

Both vessels show later soldered reinforcement around the internal base plates, particularly visible on one example. Further minor losses and wear are present to the enamelled decoration. The black “HRH 5556” inscription to the underside is a later stock or inventory number rather than a maker’s mark.
