Antique Thai Rattanakosin Bronze Standing Buddha Double Mudra 19th Century 56cm

A substantial antique Thai bronze standing Buddha, probably dating to the Rattanakosin period in the 19th century, and measuring an impressive 56cm high.

The Buddha is depicted standing upright upon a double lotus pedestal with both hands raised in a characteristic double teaching / protection gesture, related to vitarka and abhaya mudra. This distinctive standing form became particularly associated with Thai Buddhist sculpture and is also found elsewhere in mainland Southeast Asia.

The figure has an elegant elongated form with a smooth monastic robe falling from the left shoulder, elongated earlobes, tightly curled hair and a pronounced ushnisha rising above the head.

The face is serenely modelled with downcast eyes and a calm meditative expression, while the hands are carefully articulated with symbolic finger positions.

The bronze displays a rich dark brown-black patina with lighter wear to projecting areas and small patches of green oxidation in protected recesses. Close examination reveals casting porosity, hand-finishing marks, scratches and surface irregularities consistent with traditional lost-wax manufacture and considerable age.

The figure is hollow cast, with an open underside retaining darkened deposits, oxidation and historic casting residue. A small amount of loose material can be heard within the hollow body when moved, consistent with internal casting-core residue or other historic deposits; this has been left entirely undisturbed.

At approximately 2.5kg, the weight is entirely consistent with a substantial hollow-cast devotional bronze of this scale.

Minor wear and losses are present to projecting areas including the hands, robe and hair. The underside remains open and retains historic deposits and casting residue.
