Antique Chinese Bronze Brass Censer Incense Burner Lion Mask Handles C.1910

1900 - 1920
Description

An attractive antique Chinese bronze / brass-alloy censer, probably dating to the late Qing or early Republic period, circa 1900–1930.

Of classical compressed bombé form, the censer has a broad everted rim, rounded body and spreading pedestal foot. The sides are applied with a pair of boldly modelled lion or mythical-beast mask handles, an ornamental feature frequently associated with later Chinese bronze incense burners inspired by earlier Ming and Qing prototypes.

The metal has a warm golden-brown surface with extensive age-related wear, darkened patination and areas of oxidation. The exterior retains a naturally varied finish, while the interior shows considerably heavier darkening, deposits and casting irregularities consistent with long use.

The vessel is of substantial construction, weighing approximately 916 grams at only 15cm across.

The underside and interior reveal traditional casting and finishing marks, together with areas that appear to represent old soldering, casting flaws or historic localised repair, particularly around the interior wall. These have been left untouched and form part of the object’s history.

A Chinese brass censer is a traditional metal vessel designed for burning incense during ancestral rituals, religious ceremonies, or personal meditation. These vessels historically symbolised refined taste and spiritual devotion within Asian households.

Traditional censers were primarily cast from copper alloys, including brass and bronze, using lost-wax casting or sand-casting techniques. Details such as lion mask handles or relief carvings were hand-finished and chased after the initial casting.

Authentic pieces from this period typically display hand-finished casting seams, natural surface wear, and genuine oxidisation within crevasses. Weight is also an indicator, as antique copper-alloy vessels possess substantial heft compared to modern reproductions.

An antique censer functions effectively as a focal object on a bookshelf, coffee table, or mantelpiece. The warm metallic tones complement natural timber surfaces, dark painted cabinetry, and minimalist contemporary displays.

Maintenance involves gentle dusting with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove surface grime. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes, as these remove natural patination and historical oxidisation.
