Pair of Howard and Sons Serpentine Chesterfield Sofas

19th century
Description

A closely matched pair of Howard and Sons Chesterfield sofas, dating to circa 1900-1910.

A particularly attractive Howard design, each sofa has a low sweeping buttoned back continuing into generously rolled arms, a subtly serpentine front and the characteristic turned front legs with brass castors. The proportions of the two sofas correspond very closely, both measuring 200cm wide, around 93cm depth and 69cm high.

The construction retains a number of important Howard and Sons features. Both sofas have sprung seats with sprung front edges and retain their original horsehair traditional upholstery to the deep buttoned backs. The characteristic black timber stretchers remain visible beneath, while all of the brass castors are stamped Howard and Sons. One sofa carries the full Howard and Sons Ltd, Berners St maker's stamp to the rear leg together with its numbers, while the second sofa is earlier so numbered to the rear leg.

Both frames are solid and sturdy.

The sofas have recently been upholstered in an excellent quality medium-weight cotton, specially produced as a reproduction of the original fabric. The upholstery remains in excellent condition.

Offered and sold as a pair.

A Howard and Sons serpentine Chesterfield sofa combines the deep-buttoned backrest and rolled arms of a traditional Chesterfield with a subtly curved, serpentine front rail. Historically produced by the renowned London cabinetmakers, these sofas are celebrated for their patented coil-spring construction and feather-filled down cushions.

Traditional construction utilizes a solid hardwood frame, typically beech or birch, combined with hand-tied iron coil springs and natural horsehair stuffing. Legs are turned from woods such as walnut or mahogany and fitted with brass castors, while the upholstery often features down-proof ticking or patterned cotton fabric.

Authentic pieces frequently bear makers marks, such as a stamp on the inside of the rear wooden leg, a stamped brass castor wheel, or a printed fabric label attached to the underside lining. The presence of original Howard ticking fabric or branded castor wheels serves as a primary indicator of authenticity.

Pairing matching Chesterfield sofas opposite each other creates a symmetrical seating arrangement ideal for formal drawing rooms or open-plan living areas. Placing them alongside minimalist contemporary lighting and clean-lined coffee tables balances historical craftsmanship with modern interior aesthetics.

To preserve fabric upholstery, vacuum regularly using a soft brush attachment on a low suction setting to prevent dust accumulation. Keep the furniture away from direct sunlight and heat sources to minimise fabric fading, and consult a professional textile conservator for spot cleaning or restoration.
