Kontrast Antiques has dated this Howard Sons Chesterfield Sofas to the 19th Century.
A particularly attractive Howard design, each sofa has a low sweeping buttoned back continuing into generously rolled arms, a subtly serpentine front and the characteristic turned front legs with brass castors.

The construction retains a number of important Howard and Sons features. Both sofas have sprung seats with sprung front edges and retain their original horsehair traditional upholstery to the deep buttoned backs. The characteristic black timber stretchers remain visible beneath, while all of the brass castors are stamped Howard and Sons. One sofa carries the full Howard and Sons Ltd, Berners St maker's stamp to the rear leg together with its numbers, while the second sofa is earlier so numbered to the rear leg.

Both frames are solid and sturdy.
The sofas have recently been upholstered in an excellent quality medium-weight cotton, specially produced as a reproduction of the original fabric. The upholstery remains in excellent condition.
