A Victorian rosewood settee is a formal, two- or three-seater upholstered bench originating from the 19th century, characterised by dense dark rosewood framing, slender proportions, and decorative marquetry or turned timber details.

Craftsmen typically utilised solid or veneered dark hardwoods such as rosewood and mahogany, detailed with delicate marquetry using lighter woods, boxwood, or bone, alongside traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery and brass castors.

Authentic pieces display distinct dark grain patterns characteristic of antique rosewood, hand-cut joinery, original brass hardware or castors, and natural age-related oxidisation on unexposed timber surfaces.

Position the settee as an accent piece in a hallway, bedroom, or living area, pairing its dark wood and detailed marquetry with neutral textiles, modern lighting, or minimalist wall finishes to create contrast.

Dust the wooden frame regularly with a soft cloth and apply high-grade beeswax periodically, while keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber warping and fabric fading.
