John Ligonier, 1st Earl Ligonier (1680-1770)

Ligonier, a Protestant, fled France for Dublin in 1697. In 1702, he became British and served in the war against the French. Universally respected for his ability and integrity as a soldier, he rose through the army. By the Seven Years' War, in 1757, he was Commander-in-Chief of the British Army and a close confidant of King George II.

Mezzotint is an intaglio printmaking technique created by roughening a metal plate with a copper rocker to produce a dark, velvety ground. Artists then scrape and burnish areas to create subtle gradations of light and tone, making it ideal for reproducing oil portraits during the eighteenth century.
