Description

A charming and characterful 19th-century Japanese carved boxwood netsuke, finely modelled as a snail crawling across a large mushroom or fungus.

The compact naturalistic composition is particularly appealing, with the snail resting across the rounded mushroom cap. The underside is extensively carved with fine radiating gills, creating an attractive contrast of textures and demonstrating considerable attention to detail.

The boxwood has developed a rich reddish to dark-brown patina through age and handling, with attractive tonal variation across the raised surfaces and deeper carved recesses.

A functional himotoshi (cord aperture) is incorporated into the carving, confirming its traditional use as a netsuke.

The underside also bears a worn two-character carved signature. The characters appear possibly to read Shigemasa (重正), a name associated with 19th-century Japanese netsuke carving and particularly with naturalistic subjects including snails. However, the signature has not been independently authenticated and the piece is therefore conservatively offered simply as signed, without a firm attribution to a particular artist.

The carving is attributed to the 19th century, probably late Edo to early Meiji period, circa 1860.

Condition: Good antique condition with considerable age-related character. There is general handling wear, surface rubbing and scratching together with numerous fine age-related cracks and checking to the wood, particularly visible across the mushroom and snail shell. Minor marks and wear are present within the carved recesses and the signature itself is considerably worn. Please examine all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition report.
