Mezzotint Portrait of Catherine Bunbury (Nee Horneck) by James Watson After Sir Joshua Reynolds.

18th century
Description

MEZZOTINT PORTRAIT OF CATHERINE BUNBURY (NEE HORNECK) BY JAMES WATSON AFTER SIR JOSHUA REYNOLDS.

Catherine Bunbury (née Horneck) by James Watson, after Sir Joshua Reynolds.

The sitter is depicted three-quarter length, leaning her head thoughtfully against her right hand with her elbow resting on a stone ledge or table. Her expression is serene and reflective. She wears a voluminous, high-waisted gown with layered sleeves, characteristic of late 18th-century fashion. Her hair is styled in a tall, elaborate "pompadour" arrangement adorned with a veil or ribbon.

The setting is a blend of interior and exterior. To the left, a draped curtain opens to reveal a classical landscape with trees and rolling hills under a cloudy sky.

Date: 1778

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A mezzotint is a tonal intaglio printmaking technique developed in the seventeenth century that allows for subtle shading and rich, dark tones without hatch marks.

Artists used a curved serrated tool called a rocker to roughen a copper plate, creating tiny burrs that held ink, which were then burnished down to create lighter areas.

Authentic historical mezzotints exhibit soft tonal transitions, distinct plate marks pressed into the paper margin, and period paper characteristics such as chain lines or subtle foxing.

Position the framed print as part of a gallery wall, above a console table, or paired alongside modern minimalist furniture to create an engaging visual contrast.

Display the print away from direct sunlight, maintain stable atmospheric humidity, and ensure it is mounted behind UV-protective glass using acid-free materials.
