Description

Pencil with watercolour and chalk on ‘West’s’ prepared watercolour board. Signed G. L. Stampa and dated 1907 (lower right). Inscribed in pencil with the caption: Owner of car (to friend underneath) “It’s nothing to make such a fuss about – It’s an accident that might happen to anybody”! inscribed on the back of the board are instructions for framing and the return address for, G L Stampa – 8 Victoria Mansions, Sumatra Road, West Hamstead N.W.

Condition: There is a brown mark left from the previous mount just inside the framing line, a faint scratch by the wheel of the car and a small scattering of ink spots mostly present on the right side of the picture. This drawing is to be sold as seen without a mount or frame.

Overall size: 14 15/16 x 10 7/16 in. (36.7 x 26.5 cm.)

George Loraine Stampa was a British artist. He contributed to Punch for over 50 years and was the illustrator for books written by A. P. Herbert, E. V. Lucas and Anthony Armstrong. He contributed to most of the illustrated weeklies, including The Bystander, The Humourist, The Sketch and The Tatler. Stampa exhibited at the Royal Institute of Painters and the Royal Academy and was a participant in the art competition at the 1928 Summer Olympics.
