William Beattie-brown Rsa Sgurr Nan Gillean Skye Victorian Scottish Landscape Painting

19th century
Description

William Beattie-Brown RSA 1831-1909

Sgurr nan Gillean, Skye

A fine Victorian Scottish Highland landscape by the celebrated Scottish painter William Beattie-Brown RSA, depicting Sgurr nan Gillean on the Isle of Skye.

Painted in oil on canvas and signed W. Beattie-Brown ARSA, the work can probably be dated to between 1871 and 1884, during the period in which Beattie-Brown held the title Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy.

The composition presents one of the most dramatic mountain landscapes of the Cuillin on Skye. Sgurr nan Gillean rises prominently beyond the foreground and middle distance, its distinctive profile dominating the landscape. The setting is associated with the Sligachan area, long celebrated for its views towards the Cuillin.

Beattie-Brown was particularly admired for his interpretations of the Scottish landscape. His paintings combine careful observation with the atmospheric qualities that made Highland scenery so appealing to Victorian collectors.

Born in Haddington in 1831, William Beattie-Brown trained at the Trustees Academy in Edinburgh. He became an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1871 and was elected a full Academician in 1884. His landscapes frequently depict the Highlands and other areas of Scotland, and his work belongs to the established tradition of nineteenth century Scottish landscape painting.

The painting has a documented history within the Scottish art market. A label to the reverse records Anthony Woodd Gallery Ltd, 4 Dundas Street, Edinburgh, with stock number B2881. It was subsequently offered by Lyon and Turnbull, Edinburgh, in Paintings and Works on Paper on 7 February 2023, Lot 109, before being acquired by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD.

Victorian Scottish landscape painting gained prominence during the 19th century, driven by the Romantic movement and interest in the rugged scenery of the Scottish Highlands, often capturing dramatic mountain peaks, changing light, and atmospheric weather conditions.

Artists painted using oil pigments bound with drying oils onto stretched linen canvas, while the surrounding frames were constructed from wood with cast gesso ornamentation and finished with gold leaf gilding.

Authentic 19th-century oil paintings usually exhibit age-appropriate craquelure across the paint layer, natural darkening or oxidation on the reverse of the canvas, and hand-finished gilding on the frame.

Hang a gilt-framed landscape painting as a central focal point above a contemporary sideboard or fireplace to create a balanced contrast between historic fine art and clean architectural lines.

Display the artwork away from direct sunlight, heating vents, and high humidity, dusting the frame gently with a soft dry brush and avoiding chemical cleaners on the painted surface.
