Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1920s:
Neat lap dovetails on quarter-sawn oak drawer linings: precision cabinet making of the 1920s.
Deeply carved acanthus knees and claw-and-ball feet: classic Queen Anne revival styling.
Rich burr walnut veneers with crossbanded borders: high-end inter-war workshop manufacture.
Pivoting quadrant side drawers: specialised joinery favoured in early twentieth-century dining pieces.
Fine surface crazing across the polished top: natural finish movement over a century.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This large bow-fronted sideboard dates from 1920 and follows the Queen Anne Revival style, constructed from warm brown burr walnut and walnut with brass hardware. The piece presents a shaped top with a carved edge above a central drawer fitted with original carved walnut knobs, flanked by swing-out drawers and cupboards that open to reveal internal storage shelving. Elaborate floral and bell carvings adorn the stiles, while the whole stands upon shaped cabriole legs terminating in claw and ball feet. Measuring 102 cm high, 208 cm wide, and 70 cm deep, the sideboard functions as a substantial storage and display surface in a dining room, hallway, or living space.

FAQs

A bow-fronted burr walnut sideboard is a long dining room storage cabinet featuring a convex curved front profile. Constructed using figured veneers cut from walnut tree burls, these pieces typically combine drawers and cupboard compartments with decorative hand-carved accents.

These sideboards are constructed with a solid timber frame covered in thin slices of burr walnut veneer to display intense grain patterns. Drawers feature hand-cut dovetail joints, while decorative elements like cabriole legs and drop carver details are carved from solid wood.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural variations in grain colour, minor shrinkage marks along veneer lines, and authentic patination around handles. The presence of hand-planed backboards, original lock mechanisms, and uneven timber wear confirms traditional age and construction.

Place the sideboard in a dining area, entrance hall, or living room as a grounding feature piece. Contrast the detailed wood grain by hanging large modern artwork above it or arranging contemporary ceramics and minimalist lamps across the top surface.

Maintain burr walnut by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year along the grain. Position the furniture away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent veneer cracking and fading.
