Large Sunderland Pink Lustre Triple-print Masonic Jug, C.1850

A substantial English pearlware Masonic jug, c.1850, in the Sunderland lustreware tradition. It was made at the Low Lights Pottery in North Shields and is attributed to John Carr & Co. The broad rounded body, cylindrical collar, projecting spout and large loop handle give the jug a strong, practical form.

Pink lustre ornament is applied around the neck and shoulder, with stylised foliate motifs and borders framing three large black transfer-printed reserves. The principal reserve shows a Masonic temple between pillars, with the All-Seeing Eye and Sun above, allegorical figures at either side, and an array of familiar Lodge emblems including a ladder, open book and working tools. The verse beneath reads: "The world is in pain / Our secrets to gain / But still let them wonder and gaze on / They ne'er can divine / The word nor the sign / Of a free & an accepted Mason."

The two remaining panels are composed as floral-framed inscriptions. One prints the mortality verse beginning "Swiftly see each moment flies" and ending "Know to live and learn to die." The other is headed "Friendship, Love and Truth", celebrating the fellowship of a band of Brothers. This complete three-panel programme is particularly effective on a jug of this scale. The black printing remains exceptionally well preserved across all three sides. On the underside is an old collection inventory label numbered "248". The jug comes from the collection of an English gentleman.

Condition

A crack to the spout has been restored and retouched inside and out. A crack across the base has also been restored and retouched, including inside. There is overpainting around the circumference of the lower body and a small chip to the inner rim. The transfer-printed decoration is exceptionally well preserved across all three sides.
