An Edwardian mahogany double bedstead dates from around 1900, presenting a warm brown timber with a deep colour, rich patination and flame mahogany panels set within fielded frames on both the headboard and footboard. The wide moulded top rail of the headboard complements the matching footboard, which stands on front cabriole legs ending in pad feet with brass castors. Original iron screw-in side rails complete the structure, which measures 139.5 cm high, 137 cm wide and 203 cm deep and takes a standard double mattress. Placed in a bedroom today, the bedstead provides a traditional focal point for sleeping quarters furnished in an English country house style.

Edwardian bedsteads are characterised by lighter, more refined proportions than their Victorian predecessors, frequently incorporating high-grade timber veneers such as flame mahogany, straight top rails, and geometric panel construction.

These beds were primarily constructed using solid mahogany framework with decorative mahogany veneers, supported by cast-iron side rails and fitted with metal or brass castors.

Authentic pieces feature traditional joinery, natural patination on the timber, original metal rail fixings, and period-appropriate features such as shaped cabriole or square tapered legs.

Pair the warm mahogany wood with natural linen bedding in neutral tones, simple contemporary lighting, and understated wall colours to highlight the rich timber grain.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually to nourish the timber finish, and position the bed away from direct radiators or damp walls.
