Queen Anne Oak Chest on Stand, Original, Small, Beautiful C. 1700

Of a particularly small size and with wonderful proportions, a very original and completely charming English Queen Anne wainscot oak chest on stand made by hand in c. 1700 with no later timbers and retaining the original brass split tail engraved handles on snape fixings with flower backplates

The solid oak drawer linings with large hand cut dovetails open and close smoothly and offer a large amount of robust storage space. Drawer base boards run front to back and are original also.

With an excellent warm colour, the chest and stand are of first phase construction consistent with the date of 1700. The stand on slender bulb turned legs united by a wavy stretcher over original bun feet.

A few very old and long dead worm holes and some wear around the flower head backplates on two drawers where at some point the handles have been loser and have turned. Two knots in the oak backboards have been filled with wax (probably in the 18th century). Some wear to the back feet – typical of this period where the chestwould have sat for many years on a damp timber or brick floor – but nothing significant and really the condition is remarkable throughout.

The drawers run smoothly and the chest is as good and usable today as the day it was made

Really pretty hand carved half bead mouldings and a triple ogee cornice and ogee waist moulding. The top is boarded and original also.

The particular charm of this piece is both in its small size and the way in which the provincial craftsman has interpreted the high fashions of the day.

The London court and aristocracy in 1700 commissioned furniture that was open between the legs rather than tied with multiple stretchers and with substantial supports and here the cabinet maker has created a beautiful country rendition of that high London fashion.

This superb chest on stand would suit any room, it really seems almost alive and what wonderful stories of the last 326 years it could tell!

Dimensions are:

56 inches high, 37.5 inches wide, 22 inches deep. Can be transported in two halves, upper and lower case. From floor to top of lower case is 29.5 inches.
