W Klombeck Indistinctly Signed an Original Pair of 19th Century Antique Flemish Style Oil Paintings on Wood Panels

19th century
Description

Description

A charming matched pair of antique Continental oil paintings on wooden panels, one faintly signed W. Klombeck along the lower edge. Both paintings depict lively rural scenes in the Flemish Old Master tradition. One shows villagers gathered around a brick bridge, with a crowded rowing boat, cottages, livestock and ducks. The companion painting depicts shepherds tending sheep beside cottages in an extensive pastoral landscape.

The paintings are particularly appealing for their numerous finely observed figures, animals and architectural details. They appear to date from the late 19th or early 20th century and are presented in matching wood-effect frames with gilt inner slips.

One painting bears a faint signature appearing to read W. Klombeck, which becomes more visible under ultraviolet light. No reliable biographical information has been located for the artist, so the paintings are offered as works by an apparently unlisted Continental painter.

Medium: Oil on Wood Panel

Subject: A Pair of Rural Landscape Scenes

Date: Circa late 19th to Early 20th century

Signature: W Klombeck

Is the artwork Framed or Mounted: Framed, as shown Important notice regarding frames – please read carefully.

Items which are presented in frames are usually the old original frames which came with the artwork. We would typically only remove the frames if they were severely broken or damaged. In line with our conservation ethos, we believe that a painting should be sold within its original setting rather than re-presenting in a contemporary mount & frame unless necessary. Customers also prefer to choose their own way of presenting their painting or engraving. Frames therefore WILL have wear, discolouration or damage in line with their age.

When we value and sell artwork, we provide the frame free. We do not accept liability for damage caused to frame in transit. We are more than happy to remove frames before posting at the customer’s request.

Condition: The paintings display mild age-related surface dirt and varnish discolouration. Please study all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Flemish landscape painting from this period focuses on rural village life, waterways, rustic architecture, and pastoral figures. The style emphasises realistic lighting, atmospheric depth, and fine details rendered with thin layers of oil paint on rigid supports.

Artists prepared seasoned hardwood panels, such as oak or mahogany, with a smooth gesso ground. Oil-based pigments were mixed with drying oils and applied using fine brushes, followed by a protective varnish layer.

Authentic period panel paintings exhibit natural age craquelure across the paint surface, minor warping or grain texture on the wooden support, and darkening or oxidisation on the reverse of the panel.

A paired set of landscape paintings can be hung vertically or side-by-side above a sideboard, console table, or mantelpiece. They provide a grounding, historical contrast when paired with contemporary furniture or neutral colour schemes.

Keep panel paintings in environment with stable temperature and humidity to prevent the timber from splitting or warping. Dust the surfaces gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding commercial chemical cleaners or water.
