Large French Antique Pine Wardrobe

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Pinefinders
Description

A large and elegant French antique pine wardrobe dating from circa 1900. Tall and well proportioned, it has an attractive cornice with a flat top that may provide extra storage where ceiling height allows. Panelled sides echo the two panelled doors, and the wardrobe stands on bracket feet.

Originally painted, it has since been stripped and is now in bare wood, ready for waxing or another finish. The spacious interior has generous height, a shelf with adjustable supports, and flexible hanging arrangements. Two rails can be fitted, or the shelf can sit higher with a hanging rail below. The 19-inch internal depth comfortably accommodates coats and suits. A hanging rail is included, and the shelf can be included at no extra cost if required. The original door catch adds character.

It is in great condition for its age. The current-condition price is £1,000; fully restored and waxed it is £1,150.

The wardrobe dismantles completely, including a two-part back panel, making delivery through most staircases and doorways easier. Personal delivery and assembly are available; please provide your postcode for a quote.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A French antique pine armoire is a large freestanding wardrobe characterised by flat or fielded panel doors, sturdy softwood construction, and simple classical mouldings, historically used for storing linens and clothing in regional French households.

These pieces are crafted primarily from solid pine using hand-cut dovetail joints, mortise and tenon joinery, and panelled door inserts designed to allow wood movement over time, often secured with iron keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic examples feature historical signs of hand-planing on rear panels, natural timber shrinkage, original iron keyhole plates or locks, and traditional joinery rather than modern screws or staple fasteners.

Integrate the armoire into modern bedrooms, hallway spaces, or living areas as a statement storage piece, contrasting its warm wood tone with crisp neutral walls, textured linens, or contemporary accent furniture.

Preserve the timber finish by applying a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, wiping along the natural grain, and avoiding placement near direct heat sources to prevent warping or drying out.
