Circle of Mary Beale (1633-1699) Oil Painting of a Young Gentleman

17th century
Description

Circle of Mary Beale (1633-1699)

Portrait of a Young Gentleman (Quarter-Length Wearing a Blue Coat with Red Wrap, and White Cravat)

The sitter’s informal, relaxed appearance suggests an artistic character, inviting comparison with artists such as Claude Lorrain.

Oil on canvas, indistinctly signed with initials ON or OM? (upper left). An old label on the back of the stretcher attributes the work to the portrait and miniature artist James Nixon R.A. (1741-1812). However, the style of dress suggest an earlier date, probably late 17th century. unframed.

Condition: The painting has been re-lined (in the 19th or early 20th century) and is offered in its as-found state. The backing canvas is sound, and the original canvas appears to be free of tears. The paint surface has crinkled and will need consolidation and cleaning.

Size canvas: 26 x 20 in. (66 x 50.7 cm.)

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late 17th-century English portraiture, influenced by court painters such as Sir Peter Lely and Mary Beale, typically featured sitters framed within feigned oval apertures, soft chiaroscuro lighting, and theatrical drapery that reflected the Restoration court aesthetic.

Artists of this era painted primarily in oil pigments mixed with linseed oil, applied to hand-woven linen canvases that were mounted on wooden stretchers and secured with iron tacks.

Authentic period paintings display uniform age-related craquelure across the paint layer, historical relining or original hand-hewn stretchers, and natural oxidisation on the reverse of the canvas.

A historical portrait creates visual contrast when positioned above a minimalist mantelpiece or console table, pairing classic narrative art with contemporary lighting and clean architectural lines.

Store the painting away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity, and clean the surface exclusively by gentle dusting with a dry, soft camel-hair brush.
