French Louis Xvi Parquetry Commode with Marble Top C.1780

18th century
Description

French Louis XVI Parquetry Commode with Marble Top c.1780

We are very pleased to present a fine French Louis XVI commode dating from the late eighteenth century, beautifully constructed in oak and veneered throughout with kingwood, fruitwoods and contrasting parquetry veneers.

The thick grey and white marble top with rounded front corners sits above three frieze drawers and four larger drawers below, the fronts decorated with geometric parquetry and framed by delicate ebony and boxwood stringing. The commode retains gilt metal rosette handles and escutcheons which contrast attractively with the warm tones of the veneers.

The sides are fully panelled and inlaid, while the fluted corner uprights terminate in elegant tapering legs with further contrasting inlay, reflecting the restrained neoclassical taste of the Louis XVI period.

Presented in very good condition, with minor wear to the marble edges and age-related marks consistent with its age and use. Lovely colour and presents very well

Dimensions:

Height: 90.5 cm (35.63 in.)

Width: 133 cm (52.36 in.)

Depth: 62 cm (24.41 in.)

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Emerging in the late 18th century, Louis XVI furniture rejected Rococo curves in favour of Neoclassical geometry, featuring straight lines, tapered square or fluted legs, symmetrical parquetry inlay, and grey or white fitted marble tops.

These pieces typically feature solid oak or pine carcasses veneered with exotic hardwoods such as kingwood, tulipwood, or walnut arranged in chevron parquetry patterns, topped with thick marble slabs and heavy hand-cast brass hardware.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, oak or pine drawer linings with natural age-related shrinkage gaps, hand-chiselled brass ring handles, and a fitted marble slab with rough tool marks on the underside.

Position the piece as a statement sideboard in a hallway or dining room, balancing the intricate historic wood grain by displaying contemporary ceramics or minimalist lighting on the marble surface.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply natural beeswax sparingly to wood veneers along the direction of the grain. Keep liquids off the marble surface to prevent acidic etching and staining.
