Description

C.17th Dutch Old Master Oil Portrait Painting Prince Of Orange Maurice of Nassau

Brief Description:

This is an exceptional quality original Dutch Old Master Oil on Canvas Portrait Painting depicting Maurice of Nassau, Prince of Orange (1567–1625).

Painted during the late 17th or early 18th century by a talented follower of the renowned Dutch Baroque portraitist Michiel Jansz. van Mierevelt (1566–1641), the distinguished bust-length portrait depicts the Prince wearing full ceremonial armour, a beautifully rendered white pleated linen ruff, and the unmistakable orange sash draped across his shoulder, symbolising the illustrious House of Orange.

Executed with remarkable attention to detail, the portrait displays the refined brushwork and restrained elegance associated with the Dutch Golden Age of portrait painting.

The painting underwent a comprehensive professional restoration during the 20th century and is now presented in excellent display condition.

It is housed within a superb later gilt cushion-moulded frame, which complements the work beautifully.

The reverse retains several early gallery labels attached to the stretcher, providing further interest and evidence of the painting's long provenance.

A distinguished and highly decorative example of Dutch Old Master portraiture, this impressive work would make a superb addition to any collection of 17th-century European art or historical portraiture.

Dutch Golden Age portraiture is renowned for its realistic representation, naturalistic proportions, and dramatic contrast between light and shadow, known as chiaroscuro. Works from this period typically depict aristocrats, military leaders, and prominent merchants dressed in contemporary attire, reflecting the prosperity and cultural flourishing of the Dutch Republic.

Artists during this era applied hand-ground oil pigmentsderived from natural minerals, earth, and botanical sourcesmixed with linseed or walnut oil onto linen canvas or oak panels. Frames were typically crafted from softwood or hardwood with moulded, painted, or gilded finishes.

Specialists inspect age-appropriate craquelure patterns across the paint layer, evidence of natural varnish oxidisation, historical canvas weaving techniques, and period-correct stretcher or panel construction. Pigment analysis and x-radiography are also used to verify original brushwork and underdrawings.

An Old Master portrait makes an impactful statement when hung above a mantelpiece or sideboard, acting as a focal point in both classic and contemporary spaces. Juxtaposing rich, dark historical artwork against clean minimalist architecture creates a sophisticated visual dialogue.

Keep the painting in a climate-controlled room away from direct sunlight, dampness, and direct heat sources. Dust the frame gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding the painted surface; professional conservators should undertake any surface cleaning or varnish restoration.
